- Free heart pocket pattern jpg (PDF version here)
- Scrap fabric (e.g., denim and patterned cotton). A small print like Liberty fabric works well for the patterned fabric. You will need pieces of fabric about 10cm square for these hearts.
- Iron on interfacing – this is optional, but it does make the heart pockets a little stiffer.
- Sewing machine or hand sewing needle
- Scissors
- Iron
- Small decorative buttons
- Pins or clips

How to Make Fabric Heart Pockets
Step 1: Prepare Your Pattern and Fabric Download the free pattern from the above link. The pattern consists of four semi-circles around a square. The diameter of each semi-circle matches the length of the square’s side. You can easily make your pattern any size you want.

Step 2: Cut your fabric: Draw around the pattern template and cut out three pieces: one denim fabric, one patterned cotton fabric and one interfacing.

Step 3: Iron the Interfacing Iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the patterned cotton fabric. This step is optional, but it will stiffen your fabric heart pockets.

Step 4: Pin and Sew: Pin the denim and patterned fabric right sides together. Sew around the edge with a 5mm seam allowance, leaving a small gap for turning. This Valentine sewing project can be done by hand instead of with a sewing machine.

Step 5: Turn Right Side Out: Turn the fabric right sides out through the gap. Use a pointy tool (knitting needles, chopsticks, or a trusty biro cap) to create curved edges. Sew up the gap with a quick whip or invisible stitch.
