Inside – Learn to create DIY place card holders from wine corks and cherished Christmas cards. Perfect for holiday gatherings.
When it comes to setting an enchanting holiday table, it’s all about the details. And what better way to blend creativity, sustainability, and personalized touches than with DIY place card holders crafted from wine corks?
Adding that natural element to your table setting can be chic and environmentally friendly.
Why Choose This Project?
- Personal Touch: By using imagery that resonates with your guest’s personality or interests, you’re not just assigning them a seat but telling a mini-story. It’s a thoughtful gesture that speaks volumes.
- Sustainability: Recycling wine corks and old Christmas cards is a beautiful way to incorporate eco-friendly aspects into your home decor.
- Versatility: Beyond the Christmas table, these can be adapted for other events or even as a part of everyday decor.
Materials:
- Wine Corks: Champagne corks from celebrations of yesteryears, evoking memories, are a good choice.
- Christmas Cards/Card Stock: Dive into the designs of yesteryears. If you’ve saved cards from last year, this is a fantastic way to upcycle them.
- Paper Clips: These will act as your holders.
- Acrylic Paint (Optional): For those who want to add a splash of colour to their corks or other materials.
- Gold Marker: To inscribe the name cards.
How To Make Place Card Holders
Step 1: Before diving into our easy projects, ensure your wine corks are clean and free from any wine residues. If you want more colour, paint your wine corks with acrylic paints.
Customizing with Images:
Step 2: Sort through your old Christmas cards and pick ones with images suitable to cut out and use for the place cards.
Think of each guest. For example, for a keen birdwatcher like my dad, I’d sift through my collection of recycled Christmas card ideas and cut out a bird image. It’s such a delightful twist from the traditional place card.
Personalization is the fun part; my dinner guests can often guess which place settings are meant for them just by the picture I’ve chosen.
Making the Holder:
Step 3: Straighten a paper clip and shape it into a small spring by wrapping it around a pencil.
Step 4: Punch a hole in the top of each wine cork. This is where you’ll insert the wire spring.
Attach the cutout picture to the wire spring. Make sure it holds firmly.
Step 5: Name Inscription: Using name tags or a fine marker, neatly write down your guests’ names on the back of the card images. This can also act as a keepsake for your guests.
An alternative version to make horizontal cork place card holders by cutting small slits into the sides of straight wine corks and lying them on their sides. The slits will hold the cut Christmas images in place.
Other Simple Place Card Holder Ideas:
- Painted wine cork figures: You could paint your wine corks into classic Christmas figures to add fun to this decoration.
- Mini Clothes Pins: Use clothes pins to hold pictures or pieces of paper with the guests’ names.
- Wooden Photo Holders: These can be small bits of scrap wood painted with acrylic paint to match your Christmas table theme.
- Pine cones: Use a hot glue gun or Mod Podge to stick your Christmas card image to the top of the pine cones.
- Traditional Touch: For those who adore the timeless feel, stick to the traditional place card. Use card stock, fold it midway, and place it directly on the table setting.
- Branch Out: Consider placing small slits in a tree branch to hold the card stock. It brings a rustic, natural element to the holiday table.
- DIY Pumpkin Place Card holders: Make small pumpkins out of air dry clay and stick the name cards to the pumpkin stems for Thanksgiving table placecard holders.
