DIY Air Dry Clay Valentine’s Heart Bouquet

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to get crafty, and what better way to decorate your mantle than with a bouquet of adorable clay hearts? This super simple tutorial is as fun to make as it is charming to display. Once you’ve mastered this project, you’ll have a standout decoration for your Valentine’s celebrations.

How to Make a Heart Bouquet for Your Mantle

Here’s what you need:

  • Air dry clay
  • A rolling pin
  • Thin elastic thread or cord
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • Rounded tool (like the end of a paintbrush)
  • Wire stems
  • Red Sharpie
  • Pinky-red watercolor paint
  • Red washi tape
  • Small wooden branch stump
  • Tiny tin can (or any cute container!)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Roll It Out: Roll out your air dry clay to about 8mm thick. This is your canvas, so smooth it out nicely. If you roll it out between 2 mats, it helps ensure a consistent thickness.

Step 2: Add the Squiggles: Grab some coiled thin elastic thread, press it into the top of the clay, and roll over it lightly. This will create a fun, random squiggle pattern. Trust me, it’s oddly satisfying!

Step 3: Cut Out the Hearts: Punch out as many hearts as you want using your trusty heart-shaped cookie cutter. I made five for my bouquet.

Step 4: Polka Dot Hearts: Leave a few hearts plain for some variety and use a rounded tool to add tiny, polka-dot-like indents.

Step 5: Add the Stems: Carefully push a wire stem through the tip of each heart. Make sure it’s secure but doesn’t poke out the other side. Let the clay hearts dry completely. Depending on the brand, this might take a day or two.

Step 6: Get Colourful. Use a red Sharpie to colour the indents on your polka dot and squiggly hearts once dry.

Step 7: Paint the rest with a pinky-red watercolour for that Valentine’s vibe.

Step 8: Dress the Stems: Cover the wire stems with red washi tape to make them festive. Stick the wired hearts into a small wooden branch stump for stability, then pop the whole thing into a tiny tin can. Ta-da! You’ve got a bouquet of hearts that’s as sweet as stylish.
